"The purpose of the Oakbrook Middle School Band Program is to provide a comprehensive instrumental music education to all students, enable students to be independent learners and musicians, provide opportunities for critical life skill development, and inspire students to be involved in music throughout their lives."

Beginning band is comprised of mostly 6th grade students.  Students in beginning band participate in a fall and spring school concert, perform in the Carowinds Festival of Music, and can receive recommendation to perform  in  SCBDA Solo and Ensemble Festival. Students interested in band are encouraged to sign up for band in 6th grade. For the 2021 - 2022 school year, band is offered at the beginning level for rising 7th grade students!

The Oakbrook Symphonic Band is comprised of 7th and 8th grade students, by audition and/or chair placement. Symphonic Band members attend weekly before or after-school rehearsals and perform each year in Concert Performance Assessment, hosted by the South Carolina Band Directors Association. The Symphonic Band also has an established tradition of traveling to perform/compete in a regional music festival each year and maintain outstanding ratings each year!

Grade-level bands rehearse in class, perform a fall, winter, and spring concert, and also have the opportunity to perform for various school-related events such as the annual Veterans Day Celebration, ceremonies, and pep rallies! Go Eagles!

Chamber groups are small ensembles (duets, trios, quartets, etc.) that meet separately, outside of class, to rehearse. These ensembles are often created by students or by director recommendation. Chamber ensembles often have special opportunities to perform in the community or in settings where a smaller group of musicians is more appropriate. Students also get to participate in the Solo and Ensemble festival, hosted by SCBDA and get the benefit of learning individual musicianship skills that can only be taught through small ensembles!

Do I need prior music experience to join band?

Not at all! Prior music experience is definitely a bonus (especially students with piano experience) however, we start rhythm and note reading from the beginning in our beginner classes.

How do I chose an instrument?

Before you start your beginning class, you will need to attend an Instrument Testing Night. There you will have the unique opportunity to try out all of the instruments to find which ones are most comfortable, or the best fit for you! After that, you will receive an instrument assignment from the band director. For more information regarding our next Instrument Testing Night on Monday, May 7th, click here!

Is it true that playing some instruments can help me earn a scholarship for college?

Sure! Playing any instrument all the way through high school shows dedication and commitment to colleges on a resume, but there are also scholarships available for students who play instruments that are in high demand, such as french horn, bassoon, or oboe. Playing any instrument really well could potentially lead to a scholarship at major colleges, regardless of your major, as many marching bands will award you a significant stipend just for your participation!

What types of things can I look forward to as a member of the Oakbrook Band?

Oakbrook band students take trips to perform in a variety of festivals, including Carowinds Festival of Music (yes we ride the roller coasters) Universal Studios, and SC Concert Performance Assessment, to name a few. Oakbrook bands frequently invited to perform at school pep rallies and ceremonies, and most importantly, enjoy being a part of the Oakbrook Band family - some of the friends you make in band will stay with you through high school band and even throughout your life!

What is next??

The goal of our middle school band program is to lead students to participate in their high school band programs. The Ashley Ridge, Fort Dorchester, and Summerville Band programs are world class, many groups performing on a national stage, and providing outstanding experiences for students to perform and travel (both with the concert and marching bands) build musicianship, and build friendships. The memories you will make in high school band will be some of your best!
